Module 4 of 9 · A3 · Calculating embedded emissions of aluminium goods

6.Rules for your inputs: calculation factors

Episode A3-04 · Precursors and direct emissions · 2:22

Direct emissions are usually calculated per fuel or material:

  • Combustion: Em = fuel quantity × net calorific value × emission factor × oxidation factor (OF may be set to 1).
  • Process (e.g. anode carbon): Em = material × emission factor, using 3,664 t CO2 per t of carbon.
  • PFCs: slope or overvoltage method, converted with GWPs of 6 630 (CF4) and 11 100 (C2F6).

A5 covers monitoring and PFCs in detail.
